Profile of Broken Beach Nusa Penida
Broken Beach, locally known as Pasih Uug, features a circular cliff formation with a collapsed center that creates a stunning natural bridge. Seawater flows into the hollow bay through the arch, forming a calm lagoon-like area below the cliffs.
Although swimming is not allowed due to strong currents, visitors can safely enjoy panoramic views from the cliff edges. As a result, Broken Beach has become one of the most photographed locations in Nusa Penida.
History & Local Story
According to local beliefs, Broken Beach was formed after a massive landslide caused by natural erosion over hundreds of years. However, Balinese folklore tells a different story.
Local residents believe the collapse happened due to the immoral behavior of villagers in ancient times. Consequently, nature “punished” the area, leaving behind the broken cliff formation that we see today. Even now, Broken Beach is respected as a sacred and symbolic place by locals.
